LISTEN

“Sad Song” is an extremely deep and poignant work from Bob’s period as musical director for the Mel Lewis Orchestra in the early 1980s. For years, it went un-recorded (and almost never performed) until the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra recorded it on their newest release, Over Time: The Music of Bob Brookmeyer. It’s a beautiful work that showcases Bob’s quest for new sounds and a new approach to big band writing, and even has a nod to Bartok as well. It is a solo for Flute (Dick Oatts on the Vanguard album) and showcases the band’s collective singing abilities.

It should be noted that there is a French horn part and Percussion part in addition to the “regular” big band instrumentation. These could be omitted, but it is strongly suggested that they are included as they are part of Bob’s originals score and add a lot of depth to the chart.
