LISTEN

“First Love Song” is a truly remarkable piece, and one of the most well-known in Bob's catalog. Though this ballad is mostly comprised of only quarter notes, it is a study is complex, modern harmony, and requires a band with precision tuning in order to perform it correctly. It's a beautiful feature for piano (Jim McNeely on the original recording), and is a true masterpiece.

This work was included on the Mel Lewis and The Jazz Orchestra's recording, Bob Brookmeyer: Composer/Arranger, which was not only a pivotal recording in Bob's career, but from which every composition quickly became a staple in large ensemble repertoire. After years of being out of print (and before that, published with many mistakes), we are thrilled to finally make this chart available again, re-engraved and edited directly from Bob's original manuscript score, and the original parts provided by the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. This is the first time in almost forty years that this music is available to be studied and performed as Bob originally conceived it.
